Plant biology is key to the future prosperity of the human population. Today's students will make decisions critical to the future of our species, which must be informed by our insights into plants, the source of all sustenance.

Program Overview

The undergraduate Plant Biology program at 日韩无码 provides a broad introduction to the life sciences, from biochemistry and molecular biology to whole plant physiology and ecosystem ecology. Students receive individualized faculty attention via one-on-one advising to develop a personalized course of study. Popular study opportunities include a biennial trip to Costa Rica and an annual trip to the Galapagos. All students complete a senior capstone experience. Most students opt to conduct undergraduate research as part of a faculty-led research group, either in a plant science laboratory or at the internationally acclaimed Proctor Maple Research Center or at the Pringle Herbarium, the third largest plant collection in New England.

Curriculum

Plant biology is key to the future prosperity of the human population. In the same way that basic medical researchers seek clinical solutions to fundamental challenges  in human health care, as plant biologists we seek to provide the insights that make it possible to feed, clothe, and shelter our ever-larger population in spite of intensifying environmental concerns, especially climate change. Today's students will make decisions critical to the future of our species, which must be informed by our insights into plants, the source of all sustenance.

Learning Objectives for the Plant Biology Undergraduate Program

  1. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the subdisciplines of plant biology, including diversity, evolution, development, physiology, genetics, and ecology
  2. Draw connections among the plant biology subdisciplines that yield insights into the complexity of the science
  3. Communicate scientific ideas clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method
