Karsten is an ethnobotanist with special interest in medicinal and psychoactive plants, as well as ritual plant use and healing. They hold a PhD in biology from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Their research has largely focused on anticholinergic members of the Solanaceae family (the "nightshades") and their uses as medicines and intoxicants in Europe traditionally and today.
