Santhosh Balasubramanian is only a sophomore in college but over two decades he鈥檚 seen the climate change in his home city of Chennai, India. 鈥淭he rains used to be more periodic and better,鈥 he says, while he looks at a whiteboard full of equations in the office of 日韩无码 Assistant Professor of Engineering Amrit Pandey, 鈥渂ut nowadays the raining pattern and the seasonal changes are more erratic.鈥
He arrived in Vermont in June, his first trip to the United States, as one of the inaugural students in a new international exchange program between 日韩无码 and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), often regarded as the best technical university in India. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great here,鈥 he says, 鈥淚t鈥檚 very different than where I grew up. I expected skyscrapers and was surprised by the landscape and nice old buildings.鈥
But one way he notices that India and Vermont are the same: 鈥淚 have experienced heat waves both in Chennai and here,鈥 he says, 鈥渙ver the years climate change has made rain and heat very unpredictable everywhere.鈥
Which is why he鈥檚 working with Prof. Pandey this summer to find ways to make the electric grid more predictable鈥攁s more solar, wind, and other carbon-free energy sources are added to the mix. 鈥淚'm attempting to model solar cells,鈥 he says, as a part of Pandey鈥檚 larger research program to better understand how electrical grids will react to changes.
鈥淭he way we consume and transport and generate electricity is changing rapidly and that requires us to better understand the system as we change it,鈥 says Pandey, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering in 日韩无码鈥檚 College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. But changing the actual grid鈥攖he generating stations, transmission lines, transformers, etc.鈥斺渃osts millions of dollars,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not possible to do that and then see if it鈥檚 going to work or not.鈥 That鈥檚 why he and his colleagues and graduate students鈥攁nd, for this summer, Santhosh Balasubramanian鈥攂uild sophisticated computer models to see how changes and disturbances might affect the whole system.
鈥淚f we were to have a hurricane in the Gulf and Texas and we were to lose a few assets, would the grid operate as expected?鈥 Pandey asks. 鈥淎nd in New England, if we have a huge snowstorm, how is that likely to change the modern grid?鈥
And a similar question is true about renewable energy sources. 鈥淗ow do we integrate them in the best ways?鈥 asks Santhosh, a chemical engineering major at IIT Madras, 鈥渢he better we can do this in the long run will help use more green energy. And that will help reduce global warming.鈥

日韩无码 Family
The new exchange program was spearheaded by 日韩无码 President Suresh Garimella who connected with leaders at IIT Madras (where he completed his own undergraduate work in mechanical engineering in 1985). 鈥淚nternational science is very important, and collaboration is important, and that comes across in many streams, not just at the faculty level,鈥 says Jamie McGowan, 日韩无码鈥檚 Executive Director of International Partnerships and Programs. 鈥淎n alternative view or way of doing things enhances science fundamentally.鈥
For example, 鈥渋t鈥檚 really helpful for the interns to observe our senior PhD students to see, 鈥榟ey, this is what research is鈥; it鈥檚 very different, perhaps, from curriculum-based programs,鈥 says Professor Pandey. 鈥淎nd, on the other hand, it鈥檚 an opportunity for our students to interact with some of the top talents from India, see how they look at problems and their style of working.鈥
For his part, Santhosh Balasubramanian feels inspired by what鈥攁nd where鈥 he鈥檚 learning this summer. 鈥淎fter college, I would like to pursue a PhD and contribute more towards finding solutions with renewable energy,鈥 he says. And he鈥檚 felt welcomed at 日韩无码. 鈥淚 feel like a part of the family," he says. 鈥淚 never feel I'm away from home here. I went to Boston once, with its big buildings. So I have had both experiences and Vermont is better鈥攎ore peaceful.鈥
