Winners of the School of World Languages and Cultures annual study abroad photo contest are now on display on the first floor of Howe Library. “Languages & Cultures Abroad: Catamounts around the World” exhibits six photos taken by �պ����� students during their time abroad. Entrants submitted to one of three categories: Food, Everyday Life, or Storytelling. 

On November 11, the photographers' supporters and �պ����� community gathered at the exhibit space near the Howe atrium for a reception celebrating the works. “We are so proud of our contest winners, who have taken full advantage of opportunities to develop their world language skills at �պ�����, take them to the next level during their time abroad, and benefit from that experience when they return to their courses in language and culture when they come back,” said  Director of the School of World Languages and Cultures Joseph Acquisto, one of the many on hand to congratulate the winners. “Their photos are a vibrant record of their experience.”  

About the photos 

Megan Atwood won a spot in the food category for her photo titled “Ramen at Ide Shoten.” “This was one of the best dishes I had in Japan,” she said. “In Japanese, you can express that something is delicious by saying おいしい (oishii).” The photo shows a decorative bowl of broth with noodles, narutomaki, and chives. 

“I studied abroad in Murcia, the capital city of La Región de Murcia,” said Melia Collard, who won in the storytelling category for her photo titled “¡Murcia si existe!” “I took this photo on a warm Thursday in February during one of my ritual walks to the Mercado de La Farma.” The photo depicts an abstract painting on a concrete wall of a woman wearing a wide, colorful skirt. 

Of her everyday life category photo titled “Sol Granadino," Casey O’Toole said “This photo was taken in one of the most popular sunset spots in the old town of Granada, and with a clear view of the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains, it’s not hard to see why.”
