Routine Services
Routine custodial services focus on general facilities upkeep and on maintaining the hygiene, cleanliness and physical appearance of campus facilities in response to typical daily usage and on-going operations within those facilities.
Custodial department is also responsible for these items:
- Purchase and upkeep of entryway matting
- Dispensers and product for hand soap, hand sanitizer, hand towels, and toilet paper
- Unlocking (non-Catcard) building entrance access doors and classrooms on a daily basis. (We do not unlock doors to offices or other interior spaces.)
- Arranging chairs and assuring accurate seating counts within general purpose (GP) classrooms only.
- Providing chalk, markers, erasers, and white-board cleaner for general purpose (GP) classrooms only.
Service levels and cleaning frequencies vary according to area. Refer to area types listed below.

Office Areas
Custodial staff clean all offices and departmentally-managed conference rooms one time per week on a rotating schedule.
- Custodial Services does not provide desk-side trash containers nor plastic trash bag liners for individual offices. Departments are responsible for purchasing their own trash containers for individual offices.
- Custodial Services does not empty individual desk-side trash and recycling bins. Office occupants are responsible for emptying their own trash and recycling into a centralized collection area in the hallway.
- ÈÕº«ÎÞÂë Recycling and Zero Waste does supply desk-side recycling bins for individual offices. Email recycle@uvm.edu to request a bin.

General Fund Areas
Most Academic and Administrative buildings are serviced during day shift: Monday – Friday 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Athletics areas are serviced nightly seven days a week and and during days Monday - Friday.
Service Hours
Year round, Custodial Services Department provides staffing during three (3) shifts. Day shift is 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday - Friday. Evening shift policing support is 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Monday - Friday. Night shift is 10:00 p.m.to 6:30 a.m. on Sunday - Thursday. Weekend coverage is provided to Howe and Dana Libraries, open food service areas, and special events.
Residential Life and Davis Center
Custodial service for the Residential Life and Davis Center areas of campus are governed under MOU agreements with those departments. At a minimum, they receive the same level of services as the other areas of campus.

The Davis Center is staffed and serviced by Custodial Services Department on a 24/7 basis on normal days of operation.
Residential Life (Academic Year)
During the academic year, all residence halls are staffed and serviced by Custodial Services Department Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Exception: Living and Learning Complex is staffed Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On weekends, basic services of trash removal, restroom support and dining hall support are provided Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 pm.
Residential Life (Summer)
Custodial Services Department staffing is based on building usage. This is determined by the scheduling of customers from Conference and Events Services.
Research Lab Areas
Custodial Services has a dedicated Supervisor and team of custodians for cleaning research laboratory areas. Custodial staff assigned to lab areas are able to verbally communicate in English and have received additional training in laboratory safety. They are mindful of protecting personnel safety as well as the safety of research materials and equipment from inadvertent contamination, movement or other disruption. Each research lab receives routine cleaning once per week within a designated time frame/day.
- Laboratory research staff are responsible for removing their own trash and recycling from their research labs and taking all items to a hallway centralized collection area within the building.
- Project work such as floor stripping and waxing or overhead dusting will be scheduled in advance with laboratory staff to ensure minimal interruption of research work and to avoid contamination or disruption of research samples or equipment with foreign materials or cleaning agents.
- Custodians will not touch chairs, work benches, equipment, supplies, computers, personal items, or any lab research items.

The team works from 5:00am-1:30pm Monday-Friday.
Special Request Services
Additional Non-Routine Cleaning
Special request and non-routine services include any additional or supplemental services that are beyond the scope of Routine Services listed above. There is usually a charge associated with these and departments must submit a budget chartstring along with their service requests. Examples include:
- Any cleaning service in excess of standard frequencies
- Construction project cleaning, or deep-cleaning of renovated spaces
- Cleaning of appliances (e.g. refrigerators, stoves, in staff/faculty kitchen areas) and special laboratories
- Carpet cleaning beyond routine schedule

Special Event Support
Event support and cleaning services related to specific University-scheduled events should be requested through the University's Event Management System (EMS) portal. ÈÕº«ÎÞÂë Event Services is responsible for the scheduling and coordination of all services related to special events and meetings. Inter-departmental billing is processed through the EMS portal.
Pest Control
The Custodial Department is responsible for the coordination of pest control services in all academic/administrative facilities on campus. (Note: The Residential Life Department is responsible for residential hall buildings.)
